Another cautionary tale about letting big tedious companies on to your federated communication protocol: In the early 2000s there was a brief beautiful period where every person I wanted to talk to could be reached by XMPP from my personal ejabberd server. Either through bridges to other protocols or increasingly through native XMPP federation with other companies. More than half of the people I chatted with regularly used Google Chat, which federated with my XMPP server and all was good. 1/
